The “White Helmets” Go to Hollywood

Image from one of the White Helmets’ propaganda campaigns

The proposal to award an Oscar to the netflix documentary on the White Helmets is as grotesque as the proposal to award the Jihadi connected group the Nobel Peace Prize.

The netflix movie “The White Helmets” may win an Oscar in the “short documentary” category at the Academy Awards on Sunday February 26. It will not be a surprise, despite the fact that the group is a fraud and the movie is an contrived infomercial.

The White Helmets are a “feel good” story like a Disney hero movie: 90% myth and fabrication. Most of what is claimed about the Syrian rescue group is untrue. They are not primarily Syrian; the group was initiated by British military contractor James LeMesurier and has been heavily funded (about $100 million) by the USA, UK and other governments. They are not volunteers; they are paid.

The White Helmets movie is a tactic in the ongoing campaign of distortion and deception around Syria. It’s a fraud, just like the fake kidnapping of NBC reporter Richard Engel. The Oscars will be a demonstration of the integrity of the Academy Awards. The reporting on the story will be a test of the integrity and accuracy of media outlets.

Dangerous Music: Reviving Traditional Afghan Music in the Face of Terror Threats

Years of war and Islamic extremism have left their mark on Afghanistan’s traditional music culture. Though the Taliban was driven from power some 15 years ago, a generation was “brainwashed” into believing music was sinful and against Islam. Now, one school is trying to plant the seeds of rebirth for Afghanistan’s musical heritage, despite stiff resistance from conservative elements in society, which often leads to inter-family conflicts, death threats, and sometimes even acts of terrorism.

When Dr. Ahmad Naser Sarmast returned to Afghanistan after the Taliban’s ouster, he found the country’s once thriving music scene in ruins, without even one orchestra capable of playing the Afghan national anthem. In an attempt to rebuild it, he turned to society’s youngest and most needy members: its children. Since 1988, there hadn’t been a school in Afghanistan dedicated to teaching children, and education in the country, especially for girls, was minimal, at best. Dr. Sarmast founded the National Music Institute of Afghanistan to transform the lives of Afghan children for the better through the study of music and ensure that the country does not lose its unique musical identity.

The project has now borne some impressive fruit. We’ll meet young Murtaza, who fell in love with the tabla on his first day of school, and sells plastic bags on the streets in the evening to support his family. Then there’s Wahid, who came to the school from the streets as a young boy and is now on the verge of graduating as an accomplished musician. He hopes to start his own music school one day to help people as he was helped. There’s also Negin, whose father split with his family, which objected to educating girls, and moved to Kabul so his daughter could study. She may be the country’s first female conductor someday and dreams of founding a national orchestra.

CIA Honours Saudi Crown Prince for Efforts Against Terrorism

The medal, named after George Tenet, was handed to the Crown Prince by CIA Director Micheal Pompeo (SPA)

The Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Nayef bin Abdulaziz al-Saud, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, received a medal on Friday from the CIA for his distinct intelligence-related counter-terrorism work and his contributions to ensure international peace and security.

The Crown Prince said in a press statement after receiving the medal that he appreciated the CIA honor, stressing that his efforts were guided by the leaders of Saudi Arabia headed by King Salman bin Abdulaziz al-Saud, as well as the efforts of the Kingdom’s security forces.

With regards to terrorism in the region, the Crown Prince said all religions are separate from the beliefs and actions of extremist groups, noting that religious, political and social groups who have used religion as a tool throughout history do not reflect the absolute truths about the religion which it is affiliated to, or attributes its actions to.

How Trump Can Defeat ISIS

ISIS Execution at Palmyra (click image to enlarge)

By Sharmine Narwani

At his inauguration, Trump promised: “We will seek friendship and goodwill with the nations of the world—but we do so with the understanding that it is the right of all nations to put their own interests first.”

From this must come the recognition that Russia, Syria, Iran, Iraq, and Lebanon also want to pursue their own interests, in their own regions.

A joint U.S.-Russian deal to focus primarily on defeating ISIS and al-Qaeda may result in a Syria with Assad and a stronger, more secure Iran, but the upside is huge—and globally significant.

The “war on terror” will be won, an important notch on Trump’s belt for both domestic constituents and international audiences. He will have managed this feat at minimal cost and with no American boots on the ground. Washington’s positive collaboration in defeating terror will open up Mideast markets that were not previously accessible because of politics or security. The sources of inspiration and funding for worldwide jihad will be culled. And Trump can take credit for an extraordinary, Nixon-like rapprochement with the Russian Federation, yanking the two states away from the brink of confrontation and ushering in a new era of bilateral cooperation.

Fake News Could Trigger Terrorist Attacks by Mentally Unstable People

Mainstream Media has Met Its Maker (click image to enlarge)

Fake news and rumors may prompt mentally unstable or particularly impressionable individuals to carry out terrorist attacks, a Danish intelligence report says.

“The social media are increasingly being used for making threatening and hostile comments, for example against public figures and to spread rumors and fake news,” said the report released by the Center for Terror Analysis (CTA), run by the Danish Security and Intelligence Service (PET).

The report states that while the majority of these comments “do not lead to actual attack planning, CTA assesses that such commentary may lead people who are mentally unstable or easily influenced, to commit acts of violence that could constitute acts of terrorism.”

According to Danish media analyst Jan Birkemose, fake news could be “a huge problem.”

“I can definitely imagine how fake news could trigger a feeling that gets an extra twist when you aren’t concerned with the truth. It could definitely influence the mentally unstable and unbalanced,” he told Ritzau news agency.

In January this year scientists at Cambridge, Yale and George Mason Universities even said they were seriously considering a “psychological vaccine” against fake news.

According to social psychologist Dr. Sander van der Linden, “Misinformation can be sticky, spreading and replicating like a virus.”

Trump Lets Saudis Off His ‘Muslim Ban’

By Robert Parry

President Trump’s ban against letting people from seven mostly Muslim countries enter the United States looks to many like a thinly concealed bias against a religion, but it also is a troubling sign that Trump doesn’t have the nerve to challenge the false terrorism narrative demanded by Israel and Saudi Arabia.

The Israeli-Saudi narrative, which is repeated endlessly inside Official Washington, is that Iran is the principal sponsor of terrorism when that dubious honor clearly falls to Saudi Arabia, Qatar and other Sunni-led Muslim states, including Pakistan, nations that did not make Trump’s list.

The evidence of who is funding and supporting most of the world’s terrorism is overwhelming. All major terrorist groups that have bedeviled the United States and the West over the past couple of decades – from Al Qaeda to the Taliban to Islamic State – can trace their roots back to Sunni-led countries, particularly Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Qatar.

Privately, this reality has been recognized by senior U.S. officials, including former Vice President Joe Biden, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Trump’s National Security Advisor Michael Flynn. But that knowledge has failed to change U.S. policy, which caters to the oil-rich Saudis and the politically powerful Israelis.

Tulsi Gabbard: There are No ‘Moderate Rebels’ in Syria

US Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard just returned from a secret trip to Syria and spoke with CNN’s Jake Tapper in a CNN Exclusive interview.

Jake Tapper continued to toe the “fake news” lie that Assad is “responsible for thousands of deaths” in a “5 year liong civil war”.

Gabbard made it clear that Assad is the President of Syria, and any reconciliation would have to involve Syrian President Bashar Al Assad.

Gabbard then moved on to destroy the Obama lie that “moderate rebels” exist in Syria, fighting for democracy. Gabbard was clear in her fact finding mission to Syria…

‘Why is it the United States is providing support, providing arms, to terrorists groups like Al Nusra, Al Qaeda, ISIS…killing the Syrian people of all ages.’

‘Why is the United States supporting Al Qaeda, when it was Al Qaeda who attacked the United States on 9-11, not Syria.”

Then Jake Tapper walked into the knockout blow (4:12 mark), when he countered Gabbard’s claims…

“Obviously the United States government denies providing any sort of help to the terrorist groups you are talking about, they say they provide help for the rebel groups.”

Gabbard’s response to Tapper…

“Everyplace that I went, every person that I spoke to…I asked this question to them, and without hesitation they said, ‘There are no moderate rebels. Who are these moderate rebels that people keep speaking of.’”

“The strongest fighting force on the ground in Syria is Al Nusra or Al Qaeda and ISIS. That is a fact.”

“The Syrian people recognize, and they know, that if President Assad is overthrown, then Al Qaeda, or a group like Al Qaeda that has been killing Christians, killing people simply because of their religion, or because they won’t support their terror activities, they will take charge of all of Syria.”

“This is the reality that the people in Syria are facing on the ground…and why they are pleading with us here in the United States to stop supporting these terrorist groups.”

“Let the Syrian people themselves, determine their future, not the United States, not some foreign country.”

Project Duterte: The Philippines’ War on Drugs

The Philippines’s controversial President Rodrigo Duterte came to power on his promise to crack down on crime. Dubbed “The Punisher”, he addressed his subjects, encouraging them to kill drug addicts. However, his inauguration was followed by a wave of extrajudicial killings of alleged drug dealers and now he denies any involvement with the vigilante violence.

A dramatic increase in brutal street executions coincided with the start of “Project Duterte”, the police programme aimed at “Drug Use and Trafficking Elimination through Rehabilitation, Training and Enforcement”, many Filipinos claim they have lost all trust in the country’s law enforcement.

Most of the street murders carry distinct hallmarks; the victims’ heads are wrapped in adhesive tape, they are left with stab wounds and a sign accusing them of being drug “pushers” is left at the scene. Some believe the police are behind the murders, others that the drug cartels kill their own to cover their tracks. RT Doc spoke to a “death squad” member who claims to have been hired by the authorities to assassinate suspects. The more prominent an alleged drug dealer, the more his killers are paid. The President concedes that there may be innocent victims but he simply describes them as ‘collateral damage’.

Street murder without trial, suspects dying in police custody, overcrowded prisons, vigilante terror squads hunting targets for the price put on their heads and innocent lives lost: all this adds up to the flip side of the Philippines’ war on drugs. President Duterte talks exclusively to RT Doc.
